So what do I do with my number?

Keep your existing number

Keeping your number isn't a problem and doesn't cost you anything. Once you've completed your Letter of Authority (it's an industry standard document) and sent us a copy of a recent telephone bill, we need this to prove you actually own the number. We will make our application to 'port' your number to our platform. The process is seamless and normally takes around 14 days, but can sometimes be a little longer, usually if any information is missing.

Or choose a new one

There are many reasons why you might want a new number. We can supply numbers in every UK town or city, just let us know what you want. Sometimes a change of number may make you want to use a UK Nationwide number (0333 etc) so your business can advertise just the one number and then use our Uboss provisioning platform to decide how to route calls into different geographic centres. For the global players we can provide numbers to every destination in the world.

Why are things changing?

The UK has been investing in new communications, to allow a convergence between the data we need to transmit into the internet and also our needs to be able to talk to people in the way that we have done for so many years. Openreach announced in 2016 it would turn off the old system in 2025 to adopt the modern and future proof technologies the internet has to offer.

So what is VoIP and why should I use it?

As we said above its a universally accepted protocol to convert speech signals into little packets of data that can be sent over the internet and used to establish a telephone call. VoIP is actually the transmission protocol for speech to be sent over an internet connection. It's an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol, as such this means it forms part of an accepted and common standard whereby voice services can be sent over a standard internet connection. This means its perfectly possibly for carriers to host a telephone exchange (albeit a big one) in a secure data centre and offer hosted telephony as a solution and an alternative to the old fashioned 'on-premise' equipment. As technology has evolved its perfectly possible to have one 'super exchange' capable of managing hundreds of thousands of users. By being offside, your telephone system is supported around the clock by a team of highly trained engineers, when software updates are needed they can be added without you having to do anything. Backups are taken in real-time and restorations can be carried out if needed without you knowing. As far as the user is concerned they can wave good-bye to expensive software updates from maintenance contracts.

What makes hosted telephony different?

The traditional phone system is no longer ideal for the modern consumer or business. Rather than helping a business, older phone systems can actually be the cause of several setbacks.

In today’s data-driven world, you need the right tools to give yourself a competitive edge. This is what a hosted VoIP business phone system offers. By improving your communication channels, you provide clients, partners and investors with the capability to reach you effectively. A VoIP phone system is one of the ways you can improve engagement for better business performance.

What are my options?

Two options really, you could choose to invest in an on premise solution to support your business infrastructure and make use of SIP trunks over the internet to make and receive your calls. This has obvious disadvantages in that you will incur a heavy start up cost and a continued maintenance contract to keep it all working and free from external violations.

A more realistic solution is to embrace a hosted solution where the security is maintained by the service provider. This is inherently more scalable and flexible. The ability to add and remove extensions is particularly important in today's business world.
