Understanding VoIP
VoIP is actually the transmission protocol for speech to be sent over an internet connection. It's an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol, as such this means it forms part of an accepted and common standard used by many different carriers to transmit telephone calls between each other.
So what is VoIP?
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephony allows telephone calls to be carried over a standard internet connection to the receiving party. If you would like to know more about how it works then we have prepared a page giving you a more detailed insight.
Why should I use it?
Why you should use it is because you don't really have much choice, the old system is being switched off and so your existing telephone lines won't work any longer. The good news is that VoIP is now a very mature technology and providing significant benefits to those who use it.
The ISDN/PSTN switch off.
If you're reading this, then you're probably no stranger to the fact that the Public Switched Trunk Network (PSTN) is to be switched off in 2025. It's something thats been gaining a momentum over the last few years and you will have to do something about it soon, if you haven't already done so.
H3 The Openreach ISDN switch off announcement in 2015 made it clear that they would stop taking new ISDN orders in 2020, with a view to switching-off and deactivating its ISDN/PSTN network completely in 2025. This means that all copper services currently used for voice will stop working from this point – ISDN, PSTN and Multi-line. The copper will remain but just for data services like FTTC, which is fibre from the green cabinet and copper to your premises.
Why the change?
Two reasons really:
- The development of the Internet has brought about a convergence between voice and data technologies meaning it's now possible to convey speech calls over the internet. This was very apparent back in 2015/2016 when BT Openreach announced they would be switching off the existing UK telephone network for good.
- Consumer and Businesses have placed demands on how services work that limit the use of the former network.
The Openreach ISDN switch off announcement in 2015/2016 made it clear that they would stop taking new ISDN orders in 2020, with a view to switching-off and deactivating its ISDN/PSTN network completely in 2025, albeit that's been extended to 2027
This means that all copper services currently used for voice will stop working from this point – ISDN, PSTN and Multi-line. The copper will remain but just for data services like FTTC, which is fibre from the green cabinet and copper to your premises.
What's wrong with our existing communications?
The system we've been using for about a 100 years is one that extends a pair of copper wires, or a multiple depending on your needs, to connect you to a telephone exchange where the switching can take place to connect you to the other party. This had many advantages but as the needs of users changed, it also presented many disadvantages.
For the home user it works really well, but for the business user there were real problems.
Getting the right number of lines connected to your business premises was a test. Buy too many and you were paying for more capacity than you needed, buy too few and you may have missed out on incoming calls that would probably represent business opportunities. 9n top of that you had to buy an expensive system to receive the calls and pass them to the people within your business. That telephone system, known as a PBX ws also expensive to install and maintain and it is very restricted in its configuration. You simply couldn't just add extensions as you grew bigger and if you did and then needed to cut back you have hardware paid for that cannot recoup your investment costs. On top of all that you would need to have a maintenance contract to ensure software upgrades could be applied to keep the on premises equipment safe from external attack by bad actors.
The benefits of hosted VoIP
There are so many benefits but if we were to crystalise it to just three we would say:-
- Control
- Call Reporting
- Cost savings
Control is achieved through the Uboss portal and allows you to make realtime changes to your services. It doesn't matter if you are a domestic user or a company telecommunications manager, you have complete access to make changes to your end users that reflect your needs today and everyday. Even from an enduser perspective, the ability to log in and change call diversion or other features is now accessible.
Call reporting is available through Uboss to keep an eye over whats happening and when it happended. The Uboss portal allows you to see call logs in realtime, it gives you access to make changes to your service like the ability to divert your calls to another number and applying call barring for nuisance calls.
Cost savings are inevitable as the hardware or system is centrally hosted and maintained. All the software patches to protect and preserve the system are the responsibility of the Communications Provider so as far as the user is concerned there are now unexpected maintenance charges to avoid. It's all included in the licensing and you only pay for what you actually have. An old fashioned, on premise solution needs to absorb these costs as and when they occur and they can be substantial.
